5 Signs Your Small Business Website Is Costing You Customers
Your website is supposed to work for you. It should be out there right now at this very moment helping people find your business, learn about what you offer, and decide to reach out.
But what if it's doing the opposite?
A poorly designed or outdated website doesn't just fail to help you it can actively drive customers away. And the scary part is, most business owners never realize it's happening. Here are five signs your website might be costing you customers, and what you can do about it.
Sign #1: It Takes Forever to Load
We live in a world of instant everything. Studies show that most people will abandon a website if it takes more than 3 seconds to load. Three seconds. That's not much wiggle room.
If your website is slow stuffed with oversized images, outdated plugins, or cheap hosting visitors are leaving before they ever see what you have to offer. Worse, Google knows it too, and a slow site gets pushed down in search results.
What to do: Test your site speed at Google PageSpeed Insights (free). If your score is low, the issues are usually fixable without rebuilding the whole site.
Sign #2: It Doesn't Look Good on a Phone
More than half of all web traffic today comes from mobile devices. If your website isn't optimized for phones and tablets, you're delivering a bad experience to the majority of your visitors.
Signs of a mobile problem: text that's too small to read, buttons that are hard to tap, images that cut off, or menus that don't work right. Any one of these frustrations is enough to send a potential customer straight to your competitor.
What to do: Pull up your own website on your phone right now. If you have to pinch, zoom, or squint to navigate it, it's time for an upgrade.
Sign #3: The Design Looks Dated
First impressions happen in milliseconds. If your website looks like it was built ten years ago low-quality photos, clashing colors, tiny text, cluttered layouts visitors make a judgment about your business before they've read a single word.
That judgment isn't always fair, but it's real. An outdated website signals that your business might also be behind the times, even if your actual work is excellent.
What to do: Look at your competitors' websites. Does yours hold up? If you feel embarrassed when you share your URL, that's a sign it's time to refresh.
Sign #4: Your Contact Information Is Hard to Find
This one sounds so basic, and yet it's one of the most common problems I see. A visitor has made it through your site, they're interested, they're ready to reach out and they can't find your phone number or contact form.
Every second they spend hunting for it is a second they might give up and leave. Your contact details should be visible without scrolling on every page, not just buried in a footer or hidden on a Contact page that's hard to navigate to.
What to do: Make your phone number or a "Contact" button visible in your site header. Don't make people hunt for you.
Sign #5: There's No Clear Direction for Visitors
When someone lands on your homepage, they should immediately know three things: what you do, who you serve, and what to do next. If any of those three things are fuzzy, you're losing people.
A website that makes visitors think too hard is a website that loses visitors. The path from "I found this business" to "I'm going to reach out" should be as smooth and obvious as possible.
What to do: Ask a friend or family member to look at your homepage for 10 seconds, then close it. Can they tell you what your business does? If not, your messaging needs work.
