What to Expect When You Hire Someone to Build Your Website
For many small business owners, the idea of hiring a web designer feels a little intimidating. Maybe you're not sure how it works, what you'll need to provide, how long it'll take, or whether you'll end up with something you actually love.
Those are completely fair concerns and they're exactly why I wanted to write this post.
Hiring someone to build your website doesn't have to be mysterious or stressful. When you work with the right person, it should actually feel pretty smooth. Here's a clear look at what the process typically looks like from start to finish.
Step 1: The Discovery Conversation
Before any designing happens, a good web designer is going to want to understand your business. This usually starts with a conversation, sometimes called a discovery call or kickoff meeting, where you talk through things like:
What your business does and who your ideal customers are
What you like (and don't like) about other websites you've seen
What pages you need (Home, About, Services, Contact, etc.)
Any photos, logos, or content you already have
Your timeline and budget
This step is crucial because a website that looks great but doesn't reflect your business accurately isn't really doing its job. The best designers listen first and design second.
Step 2: Design and Development
Once the designer has a clear picture of your business and goals, the actual building begins. Depending on the scope of the project, this phase can take anywhere from a week or two to a month or more.
During this time, your designer will typically:
Choose or create a layout that fits your brand
Build out the pages and structure of the site
Add your content (text, photos, services, etc.)
Make sure everything works correctly on phones, tablets, and computers
Apply your brand colors, fonts, and logo throughout
You don't need to hover or micromanage this process a good designer will keep you in the loop without overwhelming you with technical details.
Step 3: The Review Round
Once a first draft is ready, you'll get to see it and share your feedback. This is where you can say "I love this, but can we make the font a little bigger?" or "Can we swap this photo?" or "I'd actually like to add a section about our history."
Most designers build one or two rounds of revisions into their process, which means you have real opportunity to make the site feel truly yours before it goes live. Don't be shy about this part it's your website, and you should love it.
Step 4: Final Approvals and Launch
Once you're happy with everything, the site goes through a final check making sure all the links work, forms are sending correctly, images are loading properly, and the site looks right on all devices. Then it's time to go live.
Launching a website is genuinely exciting. It's the moment your business gets a digital home that works for you around the clock.
Step 5: Handoff and Training
A great web designer doesn't just hand you a finished site and disappear. They make sure you actually know how to use it.
This usually means a quick walkthrough of how to update basic content like changing your hours, adding a new photo, or posting a blog update so you're not dependent on someone else every time you need to make a small change. You own your site. You should feel comfortable in it.
What You'll Need to Have Ready
To make the process go smoothly, it helps to gather a few things before you get started:
Your logo (or a willingness to have one created)
Professional photos if you have them (phone photos can work in a pinch)
A general idea of what pages you want
Any text you already have written about your business, services, or team
Your domain name (or be ready to purchase one)
Don't stress if you don't have all of this a good designer will help you figure out what you need and fill in the gaps.
